There are rumors that Wii is going to get another name change.
You heard right, Wii/Revolution, may be getting another name as
Nintendo is said to have received many letters complaining the name.
The full quote: ""We have received over 200,000 e-mails with
complaints about the Wii, and the console name has been commonly
associated with urine. We have been the target of many jokes, and we
strongly believe that it's a bad thing for the company's
reputation." Given the timing of the launch in only supposed
to be just a few months away, it's hard to imagine they will do
something at this, but guess "Wii" are going to find out soon
enough.
Nintendo has revealed plans to feature connectivity between its forthcoming
Nintendo Wii next-generation console and its existing Nintendo DS portable
gaming device. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said that Wii users would be able to download
Nintendo DS demos to their handheld, while the DS device could also be used as a
touch screen controller for compatible Wii games. Using a feature known as the DS Station users will be able to download
supplementary material, which could add special content to DS games played on
the Wii. Iwata said that a forthcoming Wii game, Pokemon Battle Revolution, would
allow interconnectivity with the DS Pokemon Diamond & Pearl games using Wi-Fi
connectivity between the two devices.
TOKYO (AP) Nintendo's president says he has no regrets about
the widely criticized "Wii" name for the company's upcoming game
console. Satoru Iwata, who was among those who had come up with the
name, said Nintendo's handheld Game Boy was first criticized, too,
and had even prompted questions about whether girls could play.
But once a product catches on, he said, so does the name. Since its
release in the late 1980s, Game Boy has become one of the world's
most popular and enduring line of portable game systems.
"I have never thought the name was a mistake," Iwata said of Wii.
"Some people seem to have a problem with it now, but I think they'll
grow to like it."
Instead of old-style remote controllers with their complex
buttons, Wii has a wireless wand-like remote that can be swung
around like a tennis racket or a baton for conducting a virtual
orchestra. Promised for the final quarter of this year, Wii is among the
competing entries in next-generation consoles. Sony's PlayStation 3
is set to go on sale in November, while Microsoft's Xbox 360 went on
sale last year. In a news conference, Iwata said Wii isn't battling rivals
directly because it's offering different, easier-to-play games.
During a Japanese marketing event yesterday, Nintendo President
Saturo Iwata revealed that games for the Nintendo Wii's virtual
console will be available for $4.50 to around $8.99 per game. The
virtual game console will allow gamers to play older games from
Nintendo consoles is expected to be one of the key selling points
for the Wii console. The price of game downloads is aimed to be
competitive with the Microsoft XBOX Live Arcade service, which
charges users between $5 to $12.50 for Arcade titles.
In other Wii news, Nintendo also expects limited losses from the
Wii launch later this year. Fellow Japanese rival, Sony, expects to
suffer severe losses after its PlayStation 3 launch in November.
Even though the Nintendo Wii will already be the least expensive
console compared to the Microsoft XBOX 360 and Sony PlayStation 3,
price cuts could further lower the cost of the console.
